Kyphoplasty are surgeries that are done to try to relieve pain from compression fractures of the spine. Fractures can happen because of osteoporosis, tumors, or other conditions.

Kyphoplasty can be used to return your vertebrae to a more normal shape.

What is Kyphoplasty?

A minimally invasive image guided procedure to treat vertebral compression fractures.

How is the procedure performed?

Patients are given mild sedation through an IV inserted in the arm during the procedure. An interventional radiologist makes small incisions near the compression fracture. A hollow needle is placed into the vertebral body. A balloon tamp is then passed down the tube and then the balloon is inflated to restore the height of the vertebral body. Once the vertebra has regained height, a special cement is injected into the space and the tube removed creating permanent support for the vertebra.
